These 3 pieces explore the possibilities of the ‘marimba-vibe’ (one performer playing the two instruments, often simultaneously). They may be played as three pieces, or as a 3-movement suite (fast-slow-fast). #1 was inspired by Gyorgy Ligeti’s Continuum for harpsichord solo; #2 - the most challenging of the set - is reminiscent of a Debussy Prélude; and #3 combines Eastern European dance rhythms with passages that remind me of my favourite Australian composer, Nigel Westlake (#3 also requires C7 and F#7 crotales or bells, a glockenspiel, and optional kick-drum or ‘foot-cajon’).
