This fun method book is designed for young students, with lots of pictures. 6 ‘patterns’ with descriptive names can be combined to make 36 complete one-bar rock beats (eg “Can you play me a heavy - ballad? Now play me a heavy - nonstop” etc.). Students learn to play these beats with the hi-hat, or on the ride cymbal, with their left foot playing the hi-hat pedal on beats 2 & 4. The same 6 patterns/36 beats are then used with a blues hi-hat/ride rhythm and a shuffle rhythm. Along the way, students are introduced to Country & Western, a Waltz and begin to look at the concept of ‘swing’.
