Old Djenné (1991/2022), for 4-octave marimba
$9.00

Old Djenné was written in 1991 and named in 1997, after a trip to West Africa. It is probably my most popular piece and can be found in the AMEB syllabus. An optional digital delay may be used to add an echo effect (listen HERE). Old Djenné is a great way to introduce students to Afro-Cuban rhythms: the right hand plays the traditional gankogui bell pattern, while the left hand emphasises the changing grooves (12/8, 6/4 and 3/2).
In 2022, two pages were added to extend the 12/8 groove, before moving to the 3/2 groove of the original. To play the original version, simply omit pages 2 and 3 (play pages 1,4,5,6).
If printing a hardcopy, removing the cover page will save a lot of blue ink!
